General insurance companies of all sizes spend dramatically more per employee on computer services than do UK organisations overall.  Large general insurers' outlay is over £12,000 per staff member whilst the national value is £1,500.  For the very small concerns the respective expenditure is over £2,500 and £500.

Companies employing 100-999 staff in the professional & technical industry sectors, on average, spend £450k each on computer services.  By far the largest spending group are those organisations supporting head office activities.  Their norm is £2.5m per firm.  This is more than a factor of 10 greater than the lowest computer services expenditure experienced by market research concerns.

Security & investigation companies' spend on computer services is three and a half times lower than the comparable figure for all UK organisations.  For those organisations with over 1000 employees the difference is notably higher.  Within the security & investigation sector large firms spend the least amount per employee in comparison with smaller concerns.

Water Transport is the highest spending sector when comparing the proportion of IT & telecom spend being dedicated to computer services.  Companies in this sector outlay almost 70% of their IT & telecom budgets on computer services.  Next highest are basic metals manufacturers followed by life and general insurance firms.  Public administration, which is renowned for its outsourcing activity, is ranked 10th with a little over 40% being directed on computer services expenditure.
