Wireless technology security is important for users who transmit or hold data within a wireless network, whether at home or work. Wireless security can help to secure a wireless network infrastructure, which may incorporate wi fi technology, access points, wimax or other wireless networking technologies.
Wireless technology security is often based on security technology protocols which encrypt wireless traffic, effectively scrambling the wireless network and protecting it from prying eyes.
WEP, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), and Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) all add incremental layers of security to a wireless network. But the most robust way to counteract wireless security risks is by having a Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS).
Other techniques available to secure wireless setups are MAC ID filtering, which allows the administrator to only permit access to computers that have wireless functionalities that contain certain MAC Ids; and Static IP addressing, to make it harder for network attacks to happen.
