The Microsoft Windows XP operating system is a line of operating systems for home PCs and business desktops, laptops, and media centres. Windows XP was released on October 25, 2001, with line including Windows XP Home Edition, and Windows XP Professional.
New features of the OS were support for Windows Server domains and two physical processors. A new version, Windows XP Media Center Edition, has additional multimedia features designed to help recording and watching TV shows, viewing DVD films, and listening to music.
Windows XP is the successor to both Windows 2000 Professional and Windows Me, and followed the Windows 98 operating system. Windows Vista followed XP in January 2007.
Windows XP was criticised in the media and by analysts for its susceptibility to malware, viruses, trojan horses, and worms.
However, Windows XP Service Pack 3 – Windows XP SP3 – the final patch for Windows XP, was released in April 2008, featuring a massive 1,174 fixes aiming to address the security issues.
