Most of us use the networking technology day to day, but what is Ethernet? Ethernet is the most commonly used local area network - LAN technology.
Network technology itself tends to be based around a local area network (LAN), a group of computers and devices that share a common communications line or wireless link.
Ethernet was originally devised by Xerox as a network standard of communication using either coaxial or twisted pair cable, which originally carried data at 10 megabytes per second, which was termed 10base5.
Ethernet now runs at 10Mbps – and the main flavours are called 10Base2 (10 Mbps, 200 meters), and 10BaseT. However, Fast or Ethernet uses 100Mbps transfer speeds, with the technology termed 100BaseT (100 Mbps, 100 meter, twisted-pair).
Gigabit Ethernet provides an even higher level of backbone support at 1000 megabits per second (1 gigabit or 1 billion bits per second). 10-Gigabit Ethernet provides up to 10 billion bits per second.
