Desktop computer software comes in all shapes and sizes, dominated by the likes of Microsoft as you would expect, with the Microsoft Office suite and Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlook applications.

Desktop security software is dominated by popular software vendors such as Symantec and McAfee, AVG, Kaspersky and Sophos. Other types of desktop software, such as finance and accounts, media players and photo applications, are dominated by a few leading vendors, whether it’s Sage, Adobe or Apple.

For many years there was a browser war between Netscape, Microsoft and others, but Microsoft has latterly dominated the desktop browser with Internet Explorer.

That said, many good PC desktop applications are also are available as freeware or shareware, and many office, groupware and collaboration tools have an equivalent free or open source version.

Desktop applications are moving towards the web with software tools such as Google Apps being available through the browser from any client with Web access.
