In this video, Lorenzo Colitti, network engineer at Google,
discusses the company's
new IPv6 network.
With IPv4 network addresses running out, RIPE NCC, an independent,
not-for-profit membership organisation that supports the
infrastructure of the internet, has launched a programme called
IPv6 Act Now to encourage
businesses to switch to IPv6.
Colitti was involved in building an IPv6 version of Google's
site. He said, "Our first goal was to get IPv6 working on the front
end. In March we launched IPv6.google.com, our first service."
The site is limited to early adopter users, because the wider
base of end-users is unlikely to understand problems with IPv6 and
their ADSL routers.
In Colitti's experience, the best way to proceed with an IPv6
roll-out is to run everything on the same infrastructure. This
enables the business to assess scalability.
