A US e-mail marketing company is to pay out $1.1m
(£640,000) to settle claims that it misused e-mail addresses as
part of its marketing campaigns.
New York’s Datran Media was being investigated by the New York
attorney general, who had claimed the company had misused six
million e-mail addresses it had farmed from around the country.
Under the terms of the settlement, the company admits no
wrongdoing, said Datran Media.
Datran sends marketing e-mail messages to those addresses
provided by its partner companies. Such messages are regarded as
spam by some.
Datran clients for which it carries out campaigns include
Business Week, Fox Home Entertainment, and Pitney Bowes.
It is not known whether any campaigns relating to these
companies were the subject of the attorney general’s
investigation.
