Chris Bishop, chief research scientist at Microsoft Research in Cambridge and professor of computer science at the University of Edinburgh, presented this year's traditional Royal Institution Christmas lectures.

He presented five talks on different aspects of computing. The talks will be televised between 29 December 2008 and 2 January 2009 on Channel Five.

One lecture, called "Chips With Everything", features radio frequency identification (RFID).

As part of this presentation, RFID firm CoreRFID provided a short demonstration of an imaginary supermarket check-out to show how RFID chips make it possible for computers to interact with the things around them.
