Data storage giant EMC today launches a cloud computing company, Decho, to offer online storage services.

Aimed at individuals and small and medium enterprises, Decho combines the assets of EMC's Mozy online data storage operation with those of the personal information management systems EMC acquired with Pi Corporation in February.

Mike Pritchard, business development manager for Decho's Europe, Middle East and Africa division, said the firm was setting up a datacentre in Dublin to service European and other customers worried about storing data in US jurisdictions.

The first product will be Mozy's personal data storage facility. For $4.95 a month for unlimited storage, users can back-up their laptops, desktops, mobile phones and other data devices, he said.

The information can be encrypted using sister company RSA's products or with the user's own choice of encryption tools.

Pritchard said there was already a lot of competition for online storage customers. However, Mozy had attracted 900,000 in three years, he said.

He said Decho offered a secure way for people to collaborate. They can share information by storing data on its servers and sharing encryption keys, he said. He declined to say when Decho might offer other applications.
