One of the security patches Microsoft issued this week may not
be compatible with a variety of applications that are closely
integrated with the
Windows XP operating system.
Application testing firm ChangeBASE says Microsoft
security update MS08-052, which is designed to tackle security
vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows GDI+, may not work properly
with a variety of applications.
Applications potentially affected include Reuters Messaging,
Microsoft Messenger, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft Digital
Image.
MS08-052 includes an update to a core element of the operating
system (GDIPLUS.DLL). This file is part of the graphics library for
Window XP.
A number of applications contain this file in their application
installation routine, which could cause application compatibility
issues when these packages are deployed.
Several applications ChangeBASE ran through its testing
procedures can load a version of this file from their source
media/download process when they are installed.
There is therefore a danger that if this happens, the
installation will result in an out-of-date version of this file
being loaded, and overwriting the version in the patch update this
month.
ChangeBASE said IT departments need to identify which
applications can do this and have a process in place to stop this
from happening.
