A federal jury has awarded £92m to Cornell University in a
long-running patent infringement lawsuit brought against
Hewlett-Packard.
After a two-week trial, the jury said HP had infringed Cornell's
intellectual property covering the way computers increased data
processing speeds.
The patent covers technology developed by Cornell professor Hwa
Torng in the 1980s, and allows computers to multi-task data
processes.
Torng has been given 20% of the award, and he says he will give
his cash to charity.
Cornell had originally asked for £450m in damages in action it
brought against HP in 2002.
