Leeds & Bradford Hospitals' Pathology Service has
centralised its data back up with EVault's InfoStage to cope with a
massive increase in the amount of data it holds. It also hopes to
cut the costs associated withdata management.
The service was created by the merger of several separate
hospitals and now processes three million specimens per year
working 24 hours a day.
The merger meant the volume of data increased by a factor of
three and budgetary requirements meant data on each site could no
longer be backed up separately each day.
"The daily
back up was starting to take five days - a situation that we
knew could not carry on. The tape drives were failing so often that
the organisation had reached the point where we could realistically
not backup data using tape," said Bruce Pickering, small systems
and networks manager at the Pathology Service.
The hospitals were at risk of being unable to restore important
medical records in the event of a major failure.
The EVault online back up and recovery product has changed this,
by enabling the organisation to centralise back ups to reduce the
resources required and speeded up time taken to restore data.
Pickering said the deciding factor for the organisation choosing
EVault was the promise of low management overheads. "As an
NHS hospital the budget is king," he said.
