Storage Area Network School: Lesson 2

"SAN Building Blocks"
Join Christopher Poelker, co-author, Storage Area Networks for
Dummies for a webcast on storage area network (SAN) basics. This
webcast defines SAN components and their uses, as well as an
in-depth look at storage arrays and RAID.

More about "Lesson 2: SAN Building Blocks"
On a SAN, as the data goes through the network, it passes from
the host layer through the fabric layer and then it gets stored on
the back end. What are all of these layers? In chapter 2, you'll
learn about the different layers of a SAN, how they're all
connected and what components make up each layer. When building
your SAN, you'll need to know which components fit with which
technologies as well as how the SAN comes together with host bus
adapters (HBAs), switches and cables.
In this chapter, you'll hear an in-depth discussion of these
issues plus some advice on how to make your SAN scalable so you can
get the greatest cost benefits for both the short and long term.
Finally, this chapter explains the difference between modular and
monolithic storage arrays, and the different types of RAID and the
benefits of each. When you've completed this chapter, you'll be
able to outfit your storage environment with exactly the right
components and technologies to fit your needs for now and
later.
What you'll walk away with:
** Knowing what makes up a SAN
** Determining which components are right for you
** Knowledge of SAN ports and naming conventions
** Understanding storage arrays and storage array design
** Knowing the different types of RAID and the benefits of
each
** The ability to ask Chris your specific SAN questions
