Weekly compilation of storage news:EMC adds SMI-S to Symmetrix, Clariion
EMC announced completion of early implementation of "key profiles
and features" of the Storage Networking Industry Association's
(SNIA) Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) v1.2 for
36 current and previous models of its EMC Symmetrix and EMC
Clariion storage arrays. The features include Block Storage Views,
Storage Server Asymmetry, Volume Composition and mapping for Fibre
Channel and iSCSI ports. EMC also upgraded its existing SMI-S v1.1
profiles to the requirements of the v1.2 specification and added
platform-specific extensions to the specifications.
Elsewhere, EMC and subsidiary VMware announced that VMware has
filed a Form S-1 Registration Statement with the Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC) relating to the initial public offering
(IPO) of approximately 10% of Class A common stock of VMware.
Open source backup announced for open source clusters
Open source backup startup Zmanda announced that its Zmanda
Recovery Manager (ZRM) for MySQL now supports MySQL Cluster
databases. ZRM for MySQL Cluster Edition supports MySQL Cluster and
MySQL Cluster Carrier-Grade Edition. The open source software is
available today in an enterprise version and a community version.
The enterprise version is offered as part of a paid subscription to
the Zmanda Network. The
community version is available at no cost and
can be downloaded.
India's largest publisher announced as NetApp user
Network Appliance (NetApp) announced that India's largest
publishing house, Bennett Coleman & Co. Ltd. (BCCL) is storing
all editorial and advertorial content, prepress applications, sales
and billing information on NetApp gear.
Cabot Oil & Gas picks Acopia
File virtualization switch maker Acopia announced that Cabot Oil
& Gas Corp., a North American energy firm, has deployed Acopia
ARX systems to support its storage tiering efforts. Cabot is using
Acopia to identify inactive files within 30 terabytes (TB) of data
on its Tier-1 NetApp FAS960 Fibre Channel systems and move them to
a Tier-2 NetApp R200 SATA platform.
Hong Kong movie studio picks Ibrix
Ibrix announced that Imagi Studios, an animation studio
headquartered in Hong Kong, has chosen Ibrix's Fusion SAN file
system for its feature film production pipeline. Imagi said it
deployed the new infrastructure to support its plans to deliver one
movie every eight months rather than every 18 months.
Copan brushes up file archiver
Copan announced a new version of its 220A file archiver product,
first announced 18 months ago. The enhancements include scalability
up to 500 TB (from 250 TB in the previous version), CIFS support,
increased search capabilities, GUI enhancements and performance
increases up to 50 MBps.
Storage vendors report quarterly results
Sun Microsystems reported its second quarter of revenue growth for
the first quarter of 2007, with net revenues of $3.2 billion.
Storage sales, however, declined slightly (a decrease of 0.2% to
$550 million). In a separate release, Sun announced discounts on
all products, including storage products, as part of an online 25th
anniversary sale now through May 7.
Isilon reported quarter-over-quarter gains of more than 100%,
but still fell short of analyst expectations with $21.6 million in
revenue and ongoing losses. Overland, too, has been forced to
cut personnel after its quarterly revenue
came in at $37.8 million, down from $48.2 million a year
ago.
Wall Street analysts gushed, however, over Double-Take's most
recent results on its conference call this week, after it reported
an increase of 67.9% to $17.9 million in the first quarter of
2007.
FalconStor also announced a 77% increase in 2007 Q1 revenue over
the same quarter last year.
More LTO-4 products released
Imation announced that it has begun shipping LTO-4 tape cartridges
to go with products released by Dell, IBM and others. Fujifilm said
it has begun production on LTO-4 media and will ship its cartridges
April 30.
CA launches midmarket business unit
CA announced the formation of a midmarket and storage business unit
focused on companies with 500-5,000 employees and revenue of $100
million to $1 billion. The new business unit will deliver products
to this market through CA's reseller channel. As part of its
midmarket initiatives, the company also unveiled CA Recovery
Management, which offers an integrated dashboard for backup,
continuous data protection (CDP), replication, failover and
disaster recovery testing.
ASNP folded in SNUGly
The Information Storage Industry Center (ISIC) at the University of
California, San Diego (UCSD) announced that the Association of
Storage Networking Professionals (ASNP) is merging with UCSD's
StorageNetworking.org Initiative. The combination of the two user
groups will bring together 5,000 Storage Networking User Group
(SNUG) participants with 2,600 ASNP chapter members.
Symantec to partner with H3C?
Symantec is declining to comment on reports in the Chinese media
this week that it will soon be partnering with networking and
storage conglomerate H3C in Asia. The reports, citing anonymous
sources, said the deal will be announced in May.
