IN BRIEF Microsoft SenderIDnow freely available

Microsoft has made its Sender ID Framework specification for e-mail authentication freely available under its Open Specification Promise programme. Sender ID is designed to counter spam, phishing scams and malware by preventing e-mail address spoofing, where fraudsters forge the address in the "To" line of the e-mail.

Ethernets set to dominate Wans, shows research

Ethernet networks will eventually dominate wide area networks covering metropolitan areas, a study by Infonetics Research says. It estimates the percentage of Ethernet access or collector rings/mesh will rise from 32% in 2005 to 60% in 2007.

Security breach costs rise by a third in a year

The average cost to businesses of data security breaches has risen by nearly a third in a year. Data breaches cost firms an average of £97 for each compromised record in 2006, up 31% on 2005, according to a study by the Ponemon Institute.
