Many small and medium-sized enterprises are putting
business continuity at risk because they do not have sufficient
disaster recovery plans to safeguard communications and data, new
research has shown.
A survey of 200 SMEs carried out for hosted IT and telecoms
provider Comtact found that 8% did not have any kind of data
back-up system in place to cope with an IT disaster.
Of those firms that had made provision, nearly seven in 10 had
only an on-site back up system, that could be vulnerable if the
business premises suffered damage. Just 20% of those with back-up
facilities could back up off-site.
The survey also found that 15% of the SMEs had no plan in place
to cope with a fault or breakdown in their usual phone system.
Another 45% planned to use their mobile phones should their main
system fail.
Comtact managing director Dominic List said he was “surprised
to see just how many SMEs still only use on-site back-up for their
data”.
