Hardware firm Lenovo and Linux distributor Novell have
teamed up to launch a Thinkpad laptop computer that runs the SuSE
Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 operating system.
The Thinkpad T60p machines – an inch thick and weighing 4.7lbs –
are based on Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology and are aimed at
electronic design engineers and others who need high-end
specifications.
The new product, announced at the LinuxWorld conference in San
Francisco, is designed to support remote working in a Linux
environment with intensive applications usually associated with
desktop PCs.
Novell is pitching the product as one that can “open new doors
for corporate desktop users”, part of a step up in the Linux
distributor’s attempts to interest corporate buyers as the
impending release of Microsoft’s Windows Vista prompts IT
departments to consider the open source Linux as a potential
alternative.
Lenovo is offering help centre support to Linux users who
purchase selected models of the ThinkPad T60p, while Novell will
continue to support core operating system questions and issues.
