China Post is using RFID (radio frequency
identification) systems from Symbol to track express mail bags in
the Shanghai commercial area.
The deployment by Shanghai Post Express Mail Service is being
used to increase productivity and speed delivery of items.
The system uses Symbol’s re-usable RFID tags, XR400 RFID fixed
readers and MC9000 mobile computers.
The implementation is part of an on-going national postal pilot
project sponsored by China's Ministry of Science and
Technology.
The Symbol RFID technology allows Shanghai Post to track the
status of mailbags en route from individual post offices to various
collection and sorting stations within the Shanghai district
automatically.
The wireless RFID system replaces barcoded tags on postbags,
which required by staff to check the contents manually.
Shanghai Post said postbag processing had increased and there
was “nearly 100% accuracy” in bag reading.
The system is now set to be adopted across all China’s
provinces.
