Blackberry manufacturer RIM has won two patent fights,
one in the UK and one in Germany, against the same
company.
Luxembourg-based patent holding company InPro Licensing had
complained that certain Blackberry products had infringed its
patents.
But the UK High Court ruled that InPro’s UK patent was invalid,
allowing RIM to avoid another costly court battle like the one it
is dealing with in the US.
RIM has also won a similar case against InPro in Germany, where
the Federal Patent Court also ruled against InPro.
InPro said it is considering appealing both decisions however.
InPro had previously taken RIM to court over alleged patent
infringements in the US and lost.
RIM is still dealing with the consequences of losing its patent
battle with NTP in the US, where it faces a closedown of its US
push e-mail service if the two sides fail to settle.
Both sides are expected in court on 24 February, where the judge
could issue the shutdown order.
As a result of such a ruling, international Blackberry users
would not be able to use their devices when visiting the US.
