A security update to Apple Computer’s widely used
QuickTime media player is being blamed for a variety of computing
problems for both Mac OS X and Windows users.
Apple released the QuickTime 7.0.4 update earlier this week to
fix a variety of serious security problems, including the threat of
hackers taking over users’ systems.
However, users who have downloaded the patch are complaining of
deleted applications and files, unplayable movie files and the
disappearance of rights to use the professional version of
QuickTime following its installation.
Most problems affect Apple users, but some Windows users have
reported that the media player has trouble connecting to the
internet when the new patch has been installed. Others have
reported problems just trying to download the patch.
Apple has made available a tool to Mac OS X users that removes
QuickTime 7.0.4 and restores QuickTime 7.0.1, but so far it is not
clear what users should do to make sure they are protected against
the reported security vulnerabilities.
