The House of Commons’ Public Administration Committee
this week heard evidence from Computer Weekly about the
government’s need for more openness and accountability over major
IT projects, particularly the ID cards scheme.
At a hearing on the implications for public services of ID
cards, Computer Weekly was questioned by the committee’s MPs, as
were Richard Tyndall a local government expert at consultants
Mouchel Parkman, and Patrick Dunleavy of the London School of
Economics
Computer Weekly’s evidence focused on the need for the results
of three “gateway reviews” so far on ID cards to be published. The
reviews are independent assessments of projects at various stages
in their lifecycle.
Dunleavy suggested that the public spending watchdog the
National Audit Office publish an annual report on major IT
projects, as it does on defence programmes.
