Learndirect turns to IP at the call centre

Government agency Learndirect has spent £4.5m on a managed IP contact centre from Cable & Wireless. The implementation includes an integrated customer relationship management application. The centre will support an increase in the number of Learndirect's career advisers from 200 to 300 without the need for further IT systems.

Equipment-hire company goes mobile

Building equipment-hire business A-Plant is investing £2.3m in more than 1,000 mobile devices supplied by MCS and Symbol Technologies. Staff at A-Plant's 200-plus depots around the UK will be equipped with the devices by the end of this year.

Welsh Assembly deal to exploit IT innovation

The Welsh Assembly has signed a £450,000 deal with IT consultancy Angle Technology to exploit IT innovations in the Welsh NHS. Under the three-year deal, Angle Technology and the North-West NHS innovation hub TrusTech will seek examples of technological innovation that they can bring to market. The profits from successful new products or procedures will be reinvested in the Welsh health service.

Consultancy signs CedarOpenAccounts

Cornwell Management Consultancy has awarded a £121,000 contract for a management information system to CedarOpenAccounts. The supplier will maintain a system that enables Cornwell's 300 consultants to access workflow documents online. Cornwell will use the Smart Business Suite application to cost jobs and handle billing as well as manage the consultancy's accounts.

Councils pick Freedom for telecoms contracts

Rochdale Borough Council, Ryedale District Council and Chelmsford Borough Council have signed three-year contracts with telecoms integrator Freedom Communications. Chelmsford is replacing its private branch exchange  with an Alcatel-based voice over IP installation in a deal worth £350,000. Rochdale is rolling out a 2,500-extension system and creating a 50-seat call centre in a deal worth £500,000. Ryedale is also installing a VoIP system for 275 users, including approximately 100 home and remote office workers.
