Ericsson and Nokia are promoting the use of a new
digital mobile frequency band to make sure operators can reach all
mobile users.
The pair are encouraging operators to adopt the 450MHz band for
their mobile networks, to enable them to cheaply reach users in
mobile black spots, particularly in rural areas.
The frequency band was used previously to support analogue
cellphones, but most operators have now adopted digital technology
and currently use the 900, 1800 and 1900MHz bands to deliver a
service.
The use of the 450MHz band, however, allows network operators to
build fewer base stations to reach users, which means services can
be set up more cheaply.
