AOL is releasing a preview edition of a major upgrade to
its instant messaging client this week.
The Triton upgrade adds real-time voice and video to AOL’s AIM
instant messaging client, and also lets users send e-mail and text
messages to mobile phones.
Making full use of IP telephony technology, Triton will support
multi-party calling for up to 20 people.
The preview edition is being made available via the main AOL
website and the company’s beta site, but only runs on Windows XP.
Triton is expected to be fully launched later this year.
AOL is the market leader for instant messaging subscribers, with
more than 41 million users. Yahoo is number two, followed by
MSN.
