BT has launched a London-wide metro Ethernet network to
allow companies to link their sites together using familiar
Ethernet technology.
BT has introduced its first Ethernet virtual private Lan service
(EvLan), and the telco says it is designed to offer companies
greater resilience, capacity and flexibility from their existing
local networks.
The EvLan is part of BT’s 21st century network initiative and is
set to be rolled out to other cities later this year, said BT.
The fully managed service links multiple sites in a single metro
area without having to build more expensive and inflexible
networks. The service is set to be more scalable and cost-effective
for businesses as they can choose bandwidth increments in line with
their business needs.
Access speeds of 10mbps, 100mbps and 1gbps will be available to
users to link different sites together.
Prices for the service have so far not been confirmed by BT. The
industry-backed Metro Ethernet Forum launched a new services
testing standard at the Carrier Ethernet World Congress in Berlin
this week, to accredit the type of supplier network hardware BT is
using for its service.
