Sun Microsystems is planning to make some of its
enterprise web authentication and single sign-on technology open
source.
The move will give developers a ready-made single sign-on
interface to incorporate into their applications, and allow
enterprises to give employees access to all web-based applications
from a single log-in.
The technology will be made available to developers through
Sun’s Open Source Web Single Sign-on (OpenSSO) project.
The identity management product will be released under Sun’s
Common Developer and Distributed License (CDDL) program, the same
licensing terms Sun is using to make its main Solaris operating
system open source.
The move does not cover Sun’s federated identity management
products, which allow users to be authenticated and given access to
websites and applications operated by different organisations,
again through a single log-in.
