Company
LondonWaste (LWL) is one of the country's only true public
private partnerships. The Company is half owned by the North London
Waste Authority (NLWA), which is a consortium of seven North London
boroughs. The other 50% shareholder is waste management company
SITA UK. At present the Company provides waste disposal services
for the NLWA, covering the boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield,
Islington, Hackney, Haringey, and Waltham Forest. They also handle
commercial, confidential, green and clinical waste for a range of
customers including businesses, hospitals & non-profit
organisations.
Since its formation in 1994 LondonWaste has developed into one
of the Capital's largest waste management companies, handling over
1 million tonnes of waste a year. It offers a broad range of
services to clients including recycling, waste treatment and
disposal.
Communications Challenge
LondonWaste’s senior management and sales staff spend prolonged
periods of time away from the office. In particular, some of its
managers – what they call roaming managers – spend longer periods
of time than normal on the road travelling to meet with customers
that are based further afield.
LondonWaste approached Orange and was asked to provide a mobile
data solution that would enable these executives to remain in touch
with the office while on the move. The decision was taken for
LondonWaste’s executives to be equipped with Orange Treo 600
handsets and a mobile email solution, Orange Office Freedom.
Mobile Office and Fleet Management
The Orange Office Freedom solution comprises a
behind-the-firewall VPN solution, coupled with Treo 600 handsets,
to enable LondonWaste’s mobile executives to securely access and
respond to e-mails in real-time.
LondonWaste also turned to Orange to explore if a mobile data
solution was available to make its fleet management system more
efficient. A key concern for LondonWaste was to reduce the cost of
fines levied on the company when its vehicles used routes that were
not allocated to the company for waste collection.
Orange has provided LondonWaste with FleetLink, a
telemetry-based solution installed in-vehicle, to enable
LondonWaste to track 32 of its waste collection vehicles enabling
it to record that its fleet stays on the appropriate allocated
routes.
“Our executives are absolutely delighted with the mobile
email solution provided through Orange Office Freedom. Orange made
sure that any implementation issues were quickly and effectively
dealt with and when our commercial director based in Kent commented
on how much better he could use previously dead time on the train,
I knew we had chosen the right solution and partner to work
with.”

Project Timeline
LondonWaste first approached Orange to provide the mobile email
solution in September 2003 and the system was securely set up and
running by December.
“LondonWaste is one of the most forward-thinking customers
that we work with and they have embraced mobile technology in the
best way possible. They have provided us with their time,
cooperation and support so that we could make sure we delivered the
right mobile data solution for their business. Mobile email and
telemetry-based technologies are at the forefront of solutions that
are delivering new value to business customers and LondonWaste has
embraced both of these with open arms.”
