How Quartix streamlined its machine-to-machine vehicle
tracking solutions, cutting time and costs
The company
Founded in 2001, Quartix provides vehicle tracking solutions to
the UK's building and construction, specialised site and field
services, transportation, security and product distribution
industries. Quartix's machine-to-machine (M2M) vehicle tracking
system uses GPS and the internet to monitor the movements of
vehicles. Unlike other vehicle tracking systems, it requires no
software installation nor changes to firewall or security settings.
All logs and tracker reports are accessed through standard internet
tools such as Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook.
Finding the right partner
In its early set-up phase, Quartix approached three UK network
operators to find the best network partner to help it build its M2M
system. Orange provided the best network choice and has remained
the company's sole and trusted network partner.
Collaborating in M2M
Quartix now has more than 400 customers and has connected more
than 3,000 vehicles in the UK to the Orange network. One such
customer, Rygor Group Services, uses Quartix's M2M system to manage
a fleet of 120 vehicles. Taking merely an hour to install in each
vehicle, the system is used to track the Rygor fleet, provide
breakdowns of miles covered, analyse average speeds and identify or
respond to driver issues. The company receives daily web-based
reports to track its fleet. With no complicated software to
install, the system is so simple that Rygor now handles the
installations itself, going to Quartix for the necessary parts such
as the Orange SIMs and in-vehicle hardware.
Rygor's group director Clive Squire says, "The Quartix system
has worked really well. The key issue is cost against benefit. The
efficiency savings in terms of time and fuel more than outweigh the
costs of installing and running the system."
Orange Quartix partnership success
Central to this successful channel partnership has been Orange's
dedication to supporting Quartix. From small to big shipment
orders, Orange has responded quickly and punctually to all of
Quartix's needs.
The company sees this as indicative of the right way to manage a
channel partnership, be responsive to resellers, understand their
business and be supportive.
An important tool to enable this is the Orange Orpac SIM
provisioning solution, which has helped Quartix improve both
operational efficiency and time to market. Quartix can use Orpac to
provision the SIMs, enabling it to add or bar services and monitor
customer usage. This ensures that M2M solutions can be deployed
quicker and more effectively, with minimal disruption to its
customers' business.
Customer ROI
By working with Orange as its M2M channel partner, Quartix has
already benefited from:
- greater efficiency in ordering, managing and deploying
M2M-based vehicle tracking solutions
- satisfied customers, who recognise the value of Quartix and its
solutions
- reassurance and 24/7 support from Orange
- reduced operational costs by migrating to a simple electronic
system for billing and SIM deployment
- financial growth and profitability
- greater kudos working with an established and credible brand
like Orange.

Quotes
"We're only a small business but that's not the way Orange
treats us. They were the only operator to pay attention to our
business and have been instrumental in our success ever since. It's
the win-win situation that we were hoping for."
Andy Walters, managing director, Quartix
"Each Orange channel partner is treated exactly like a valued
customer. No one reseller is the same and we need to understand
their business to provide the right level of support for their
customers. Quartix has proven that we've developed the right
channel strategy and together with their support we are helping to
lead the way in demonstrating that M2M is neither too complicated
nor too expensive."
