Fifteen telecoms firms have launched the eMobility
Technology Platform to boost the development of new technology in
Europe.
The platform, launched with backing from the European Commission,
is designed to enhance co-operation among industry players, the
research community, public authorities and the EC.
Component makers, European academics and operators have joined the
15 telecoms firms who have backed the project. The group includes
Alcatel, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, France Telecom, H3G, Lucent
Technologies, Motorola, Nokia, Thales, Philips, Siemens,
STMicroelectronics, TIM, Telefonica Mobiles and Vodafone.
The objective is to drive future technology development in mobile
and wireless communications in a way that best serves citizens and
the European economy.
The platform supports the EC's revamped Lisbon Strategy, which
seeks to deliver a competitive and knowledge-based society in
Europe using IT. The initiative comes as countries such as China
and Korea are ramping up their research and development in the
mobile and wireless fields.
Magnus Madfors, chairman of the eMobility steering board, said,
"Europe has been leading mobile development with a consistent
regulatory approach and considerable R&D investment."
The initiative is aimed at developing large-scale approaches to
R&D, wireless and applications in the context of digital
convergence. "The eMobility Technology Platform will define and
implement a comprehensive research agenda in the mobile and
wireless sector," said Madfors.
