McAfee and InnoPath Software are collaborating to offer users a mechanism for installing and updating anti-virus software on their mobile devices "over the air".

The two companies will offer the service to users via mobile operators and handset manufacturers, to support smartphones and personal digital assistants (PDAs).

The initiative follows the introduction of a similar mobile anti-virus service from F-Secure introduced at the turn of the year.

Over the past year, mobile viruses have been more common as virus writers take advantage of the advanced features and applications now available on many mobile devices.

While McAfee will provide the anti-virus software and update security signatures, InnoPath will provide the device management software needed to offer the service to users.
