3Com and BorderWare Technologies have announced a
strategic OEM licensing relationship.
Under the agreement, BorderWare is licensing its MXtreme Mail
Firewall technology to 3Com, which will result in a 3Com-branded
e-mail security product aimed at small and medium-sized
enterprises. Further terms of the agreement have not yet been
disclosed.
"The SME market is ripe for a multi-layered approach to e-mail
security that delivers anti-spam, anti-virus and general protection
against a variety of e-mail threats," said Jason Wright, industry
analyst with Frost & Sullivan. The 3Com e-mail firewall looks
to address the next stage in the market's development."
According to Frost & Sullivan research, many enterprises are
realising that e-mail servers need protection from spam and viruses
as desktop protection is not good enough to deal with some of the
threats.
E-mail server anti-virus product sales are expected to grow at
18.8% each year from $363m (£192m) in 2003 to $1.21bn in 2010.
Along with e-mail servers, gateways represent the area where Frost
& Sullivan predicts the highest growth – 19.9% annually from
$329m in 2003 to $1.17bn in 2010.
