UN creates IT and policy group for the
internet
The UN has created a working group made up of governments,
non-governmental organisations and the private sector to manage the
governance of the internet at technical and policy levels. The
Working Group on Internet Governance met for the first time today
(23 November).
Windows CE becomes the number one PDA
OS
The latest market data from Gartner found that the Microsoft
Windows CE operating system is now the most dominant platform for
handheld computers. Windows CE surpassed Palm OS for the first time
in the third quarter of 2004. Microsoft Windows CE accounted for
48.1% of worldwide PDA shipments in third quarter of 2004. Palm OS
represented 29.8% of the market, down from a 46.9% market share in
the same period last year.
Red Hat revamps Fedora Linux security
Red Hat has revamped its Fedora Linux distribution to include a
version of the Security Enhanced Linux developed by the US National
Security Agency. According to Red Hat, the operating system locks
down processes which are considered vulnerable to attacks.
RSA Security releases secure single
sign-on
RSA Security has introduced Sign-On Manager, which combines the
firm's authentication products with enterprise single sign-on. The
authentication system supports password-only and two-factor
authentication and offers policy and credential management.
Network Appliance doubles data storage
Network Appliance has produced what it said is the first dynamic
virtualisation engine, capable of aggregating physical storage
components into intelligent, self-optimising capacity pools. With
its new Data Ontap 7G, users' storage utilisation can double and
I/O performance for enterprise-class applications is increased, the
company said.
