Eighty one per cent of FTSE 100 companies do not comply with guidelines on making websites accessible for disabled users, a survey has found.

Overall, 57% of the large UK companies surveyed by web application supplier LB Icon failed to meet three or more criteria set by the World Wide Web Consortium for ensuring equal access to websites.

Businesses have to make reasonable adjustments to the services they deliver for disabled customers under the Disability Discrimination Act . Part three of the Act came into force on 1 October.

Organisations with an online presence are expected to take measures such as converting text into speech, making forms accessible and providing text equivalents for important images.

IT managers can use two free programs, Bobby and Wave, to check whether their websites comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.
