Winterflood Securities has installed a dedicated metro
Ethernet internet connection into its office in order to support
its network of brokers and financial institutions.
The connection - designed to give easy, fast and secure access
to its real-time trading application Winner Trader - is supplied by
network connectivity specialist Exponential-e, and is claimed to
enable Winterflood clients access to pricing information and to buy
and sell shares in a matter of milliseconds.
Previously the company had to install specific software onto
each individual client’s PC. This led to resource implications when
maintenance and support issues were raised. The migration to
running Winner Trader online via a standard web browser simplified
the whole process. Clients now have only to log on via their web
browser using secure user IDs and passwords.
Noel Mooney, head of technology at Winterflood, said, “Maximum
uptime of user and client connectivity is critical to our business.
We therefore needed a solution which offered resilience and
diversity.”
Winterflood already had a 10mbps Ethernet connection for its
e-mail and web based requirements and it is now using a metro
Ethernet connection to connect to its brokers and clients outside
its own network.
The use of Ethernet technology outside the firm means there is
easier and cheaper connectivity to the firm’s existing Ethernet
local area network as it does not have to use expensive leased
lines which are commonly used in the financial sector.
