Oracle has begun shipping a cut-down version of its application server software designed for small and medium-sized firms.

Oracle Application Server Standard Edition One is a J2EE-based application server, which is charged at £2,800 per processor. It is compatible with J2EE 1.3 and has built-in transaction management, messaging, systems management and clustering facilities. Although limited to two processors, it is half the price of Oracle Application Server Standard Edition, said Oracle.

Along with per-processor pricing, the package is also available with Named User Plus licensing at £83 per user, with a minimum of five users. The cut-down application server provides connectivity to Oracle and non-Oracle databases, along with a pre-built portal which, Oracle said, offers basic content management and publishing capabilities with simplified editing and administration.
