EMC has developed technology which it says will allow users to archive any data type from any application running on any open platform.

Through a new version of its Centera Universal Access software and Centera's open application programming interface, EMC said users can archive data from open systems and mainframe applications that are integrated to the API, or from applications running on Windows, Unix or Linux environments that use industry-standard protocols.

EMC said Centera Universal Access Version 2.1 natively supports protocols including NFS, CIFS, FTP and HTTP.

Along with API access, mainframe users can also run third-party connectivity technology called Mainframe Appliance for Storage to access Centera via Escon or Ficon.
