Employers are losing their stocks of management expertise,
technical skills and historical company knowledge as staff leave IT
departments for new jobs.
The majority of human resources professionals are "very worried"
that their organisations are creating "black holes" as skilled
information professionals move on to new work, a survey of more
than 200 HR managers has revealed.
The findings suggest that organisations are not doing enough to
ensure they capture vital knowledge held by key management staff.
As a result, businesses risk losing essential internal management
expertise, the report by information service HR Gateway said.
Petra Cook, head of policy at the Chartered Management Institute,
said businesses should provide high-quality management training, to
encourage key staff to stay.
"Greater responsibility is being shifted to the front line and the
skill sets are changing. Firms need to realise this or they will
lose top-quality managers," she said.
The loss of key managers can lead to businesses losing their
organisational history and in some cases their identities, the HR
Gateway report said.
