The IT recruitment market showed signs of a steady recovery at the end of last year, with a 4% rise in advertised IT vacancies, according to the latest CWJobs Quarterly IT Skills Index.

Despite December traditionally being a slow month for recruitment, the number of permanent IT vacancies rose by 4% between October and December 2003, and IT contract jobs rose by 1%, according to the CWJobs Quarterly IT Skills Index.

The regions that saw the fastest growth in demand for permanent IT staff were outer London (14%), the West Midlands (10%) and inner London (9%). Demand was greatest for staff with experience in SQL, Unix and C++ systems.

The CWJobs Quarterly IT Skills Index is based on information taken from all jobs advertised in the leading UK print publications and online recruitment sites.
