Construction company Amec has bought core software from a UK company because enterprise resource planning systems from companies such as SAP could not support its business processes.

Amec expects to spend as little as one third of what it would have to invest in ERP from a top-five player by buying Coins software.

It has replaced legacy bespoke and Conax and Prospero software with a single system using Coins' financial module, which supports 600 users.

Bruce Turner, project manager for the implementation, said SAP could not accommodate UK-specific industry practices.

The first stages of the system will go live early next year.
