Novell has released a new version of its Netware operating
system, quashing rumours that it was planning to leave the market
to Microsoft Windows and Linux.
The news came at the company's Brainshare event, where the latest
version of Netware, codenamed Nacoma, was unveiled.
Analyst Gary Barnett of Ovum said, "As far as the network operating
system side of Novell's business is concerned, it is trying to keep
its existing user base happy but it is unlikely to win new
customers. It has been a good product but Netware will not rock the
world and is in graceful decline."
Peter Joseph, Novell's EMEA director for corporate strategy, said,
"Market forces mean companies are looking at environments such as
Linux. But Novell is committed to Netware and it will be around for
some time to come."
