Industry minister Nigel Griffiths has promised to do everything he
can to speed-up the improvement of broadband Internet access
throughout the UK.
Responding to pressure from MPs for the Government to do more to
hasten the wider provision of the broadband network, Griffiths said
ministers were doing all they could to ensure that at the end of
three years the UK will be "in the lead in broadband in terms of
government procurement and government services".
MPs from all parties demanded more action to promote broadband
Internet across social classes and in rural areas. Griffiths said
the Government is fast-tracking a licensing regime for satellite
provision and is reviewing planning regulations for terminals,
encouraging infrastructure sharing, and using more effective
procurement of public sector broadband requirements to improve
value for money and drive broadband into rural areas.
