Microsoft is to make it easier to access corporate e-mail from
mobile devices and simplify migration to Exchange from competing
messaging systems with new tools announced this week.
At the annual Microsoft Exchange Conference in Orlando, the
software giant outlined details of the next version of Mobile
Information Server (MIS), which is designed to provide users with
"over the air" server synchronisation from their mobile devices to
their company's Exchange server.
Paul Flessner, senior vice-president of Microsoft's .net Enterprise
Server Division, said MIS 2002 Enterprise Edition would include
enhanced security, additional phone support, new administration
tools and new language support.
To support its push into the mobile arena, Microsoft has formed an
alliance with wireless infrastructure provider MobileSys. The aim
is to provide mobile workers with secure wireless access to
corporate information via MIS 2002 and the MobileSys global data
network.
Microsoft also unveiled the Exchange 2000 Competitive Migration
Kit, which is aimed at encouraging businesses to switch from
competing systems, such as Lotus Notes.
The kit, designed to complement the connectors and utilities in
Exchange 2000, includes webcasts, white papers and other technical
material needed by messaging professionals to migrate their systems
to Exchange.
