Symantec has announced a reorganisation of its security operations,
forming Symantec Security Response, a group that will offer
research, technical support and response to its customers.
The group will provide customers with a single point of contact in
order to help combat future security incidents, which Symantec
believes will become more likely to break out of easily definable
categories such as "virus" or "intrusion", according to the
company's Sharon Ruckman. She cited the example of the Code Red
worm, which is both a worm and an intrusion exploit.
The new organisation will offer customers a co-ordinated response
to threats and a holistic view of security, she added, explaining
that customers cared more about solving problems than how they had
been caused.
Ruckman, who will serve as senior director of the body, said it
would unite previously disparate parts of the company, including
research centres, technical support operations and customer
communications efforts.
No new services or features are expected to arise out of the
organisation, nor will any staff be added or cut, Ruckman said. The
changes will not be immediately apparent to end users, though
corporate customers might notice the difference, she said.
