The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) is to stage its
second major international conference on the trademark and
copyright problems caused by the development of the Internet and
e-commerce.
Representatives from industry, governments and academic
institutions will meet in Geneva from 19 to 21 September to discuss
recent and future commercial and technological developments on the
Web and their impact on the intellectual property system
A WIPO statement said delegates would examine issues including
"creation, ownership, identity and governance on the
Internet".
It added that speeches and seminars would focus on Internet domain
names, business methods patenting, Web site branding, rights
management systems, privacy, digital cultural heritage and the
digital divide.
Online intellectual property administration, new top-level domain
names, jurisdiction and applicable law and the influence of new
information technologies on intellectual property service delivery
will also be discussed
The first WIPO conference, held in September 1999, led to the
acceptance of ICANN and the resulting launch of the Uniform Domain
Name Dispute Resolution Policy, a WIPO-operated procedure settling
disputes over the ownership of Web addresses.
