SilverStream updates app server

Silverstream Software has enhanced its application server with stronger support for Web services.

The application server vendor has touted its Web services strategy for months, aiming to make its e-commerce stack a viable option in a market that is led by BEA and IBM, and that also includes Sun Microsystems/iPlanet, Hewlett-Packard/Bluestone Software, and Oracle.

In April, SilverStream honed its product line in preparation for Web services.

"This is the release in which the Web services functionality and the J2EE [Java 2 Enterprise Edition] IDE [integrated drive electronics] are integrated into the core app server technology," said Misha Davidson, product manager for SilverStream.

SilverStream has also upgraded its toolset, which works with other vendors' application servers, namely IBM and BEA. "It can certainly be extended to any platform," Davidson said.

Most application server vendors have tailored their toolkits to work with other vendors' application servers over the past couple of months.

A recent International Data Corporation report stated that BEA owns 18.2% of the market. IBM is catching up with 15.4% and Sun/iPlanet weighs in at 8%.
