The Ministry of Defence is to develop the biggest asset management
system in Europe as a measure to slash its logistics costs.
Paul PhillipsWorking with a consortium of systems integrators, led by IBM
Global Services and including KPMG, EDS and Cap Gemini, the first
stage of the MoD project alone is worth £20m.
When completed, the system will allow the Ministry to monitor
levels of equipment and fuel throughout its supply chain and bring
together the logistics operations of the Army, Navy and RAF.
A spokesperson for the MoD said, "At present most of our systems
are paper-based together with some standalone systems. The
logistics challenge is a large one spanning 88 systems and 40,000
people around the world. The existing systems will be backed up to
a store and retrieve paper-based system.
Indus's Passport asset management system will be used as the
central software platform and the system will be rolled out in
stages over a five-year period around the globe.
Indus was chosen because of its track record in working for
large organisations in North America.
